Vietnamese Chao Tom and Nem Ran Make Top 100 Global Appetizers

Taste Atlas, a renowned international food website, has ranked both Chao tom (Sugar Cane Shrimp) and Nem or Cha gio (Fried Spring Rolls) among the world’s top 100 appetizers.

Chao tom, a Hue’s cuisine, secured the 26th spot on the list. This traditional dish features minced shrimp marinated in a savory blend of garlic, sugar, and salt, wrapped around a piece of sugar cane. Some variations include ground pork and can be steamed, grilled, or fried.

Nem ran, Vietnam’s popular fried spring rolls, claimed the 79nd position. These crispy treats are filled with a delectable mixture of ground pork, shrimp, carrots, jicama, mushrooms, glass noodles, and bean sprouts, wrapped in thin rice paper.

Both Chao tom and Nem ran are not only enjoyed as appetizers but are often served as main courses, highlighting their versatility in Vietnamese cuisine.
